Straight Cash Homie

If you've had a cocktail in the Twin Cities in the last 10 years chances are good that bartender Johnny Michaels was involved, in some way, in its creation.  Whether through consulting, inspiring, or teaching, Michaels' reach and influence is wide within the Twin Cities bar community.  His Northstar Cocktails recipe book highlights recipes and techniques from some of his protégés, and proceeds benefit the SPCA International.

Now, after a long break he is back behind the bar -- this time at The Alchemist in White Bear Lake, MN.  Michaels' fun take on an Old Fashioned, called "Straight Cash Homie," is not named for a song (like so many of his creations are), but rather for a quip uttered by Randy Moss, the loved-to-be-hated former Minnesota Viking.

Recipe:

Instructions:

In an empty pint glass, add a teaspoon of Turbinado sugar syrup, two dashes of Angostura original bitters, one dash of Angostura orange bitters (optional), and gently muddle.

Add a large rock of ice to the glass, pour in whiskey, and garnish with an orange peel and brandy cherry on a skewer.
